The Blot was able to catch the elusive Blue Blob iconed Larry and ask him a few questions:
Blot: So how'd ya find this place Larry?
Larry: I came here in the Spring of 2000. A person I knew in real life directed me to 4degreez so that I could take part in hostile creationism v. evolutionary theory debates. For the sake of privacy, I'll avoid details.
Blot: And what are your vitals? (personal "asl" type information you want to share
Larry: 24. Male, Netherlands. My interests currently include Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, movies, video games, and dancing.
Blot: Care to elaborate on what Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is?
Larry: BJJ is a combat sport that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. Instead of punching and kicking each other black and blue, the goal in combat is to maintain control of an opponent and ultimately force submission with a choke or joint lock. BJJ is what most of the UFC fighters use once they're on the ground.
What I like the most about it is that during sparring, the participants fight exactly as they would during a real fight, except someone tapping meaning the match is over and someone has won. What I like the least are the guys who come to practice and have been doing it for a decade; they're really good at dishing out pain, though they ARE extremely helpful in pointing out and fixing weaknesses in your game.
Blot: Hmmm I don't think I've ever heard of that type of sport. Very interesting. Oh when you say dancing...do you train or just like to go out and dance in clubs?
Larry: I enjoy dancing lessons. I tried a few salsa dancing lessons here, but it was very frustrating to go through the lessons in Dutch. The instructor had a thick accent, so I couldn't really understand him. I go out to clubs when my mates invite me out; this is usually once or twice per weekend.
Blot: How long do you plan on being in the Netherlands?
Larry: I'll most likely be here for one or two more years. Plans have a way of changing, though.
Blot: Are you versed in Dutch? how much of the language did you know prior to going there?
Larry: Before coming, I practiced with Rosetta Stone software for a couple of months. This gave me the ability to describe events that rarely actually occur, such as a dog running after a boy.
After I arrived here, I practiced by talking to people and reading children's books. When I talk to people now, they usually say my Dutch is impressive, but I don't read too much into that for two reasons. First, their standards are fairly low because most foreigners don't learn Dutch. Second, "impressive" is one of the words that the Dutch overuse ("cozy" is another example of a word they overuse).
Blot: Your stats show that you post more on Politics than Controversy, Holy War, Religion boards...Sounds like what you came here for and what you participate in are vastly different. What makes you stick around on 4K?
Larry: Holy war and religion board discussions got really repetitive after awhile. Lately, I typically swing by and get a sense of the discussion going on, but rarely feel like getting involved.
Politics are different because the hot issues of the day and the most prominent candidates are constantly changing. This helps to keep the topics interesting. I'm also a junkie for following the electoral process.
Blot: What are your thoughts on 4th Kingdom and its membership?
Larry: 4K is a remarkably diverse message board site. It's been a pleasure watching it develop and being a small part of it. I find a handful of people annoying, but it's easy enough to simply avoid them.
Blot: If you were granted three wishes and the only thing you couldn't wish for is more wishes, what would you wish for?
Larry: I can't answer the three wishes question right now; I need more coffee. However, I'm leaning towards three ham sandwiches.
Now that Larry has gotten us totally hungry, let's take a look at his 4K stats:
