The Spooky tallmanian Movie Challenge: Round 5 Answers

by tallman

The winner of round 4 is... another TIE: gmichailovic and Samael, with a whopping 9 correct answers each. naturallmyistic put in a damn good showing with 8 correct answers. Great job, and thanks for all who participated.

I got the most entries ever this month. The game seems to be catching on. Don't forget, play every month to win the cumulative prize (Which will be some sort of DVD set awarded after maybe the 6th month...) Right now, Samael and Sovawanea are doing pretty well on the cumulative front... So here are the answers to round 5:

Screenshot 1: An American Werewolf in London
Interestingly, a few people confused this with Gremlins, which I didn't expect, but which also makes a kinda sense (it's the jackets, I think). Other guesses include: "Will and Grace Go to Yosemite!", "Revenge of Dawson's Crack" and "Brokeback Mountain." Heh. Anyway, the rest of you got it, so good on ya! Also, best Werewolf movie of all time? I think it might be!

Screenshot 2: Halloween
Yeah, yeah, I chose a difficult screen for this one. A couple of you got caught up in it, but most of you guessed correctly. Other funny guesses: "Titanic: The Wreckoning" and "Ghost? (too soon?)" Anyway, best slasher movie of all time and probably the best movie to watch on Halloween every year. A classic!

Screenshot 3: My Bloody Valentine (1981)
I thought the screenshot of this one might give it away more than any dude in a miner's costume, but this was one of the lesser known titles. I also thought the recent remake would have helped recognition, but whatever. It's an above average slasher film and better than the recent remake. Other guesses: "Twin Peaks: The I Heart Twin Peaks Story" and "I don't know, but if someone's heart does not get pulled out of their chest as part of some kind of Satanic sacrifice, this is poor foreshadowing in a road sign for a spooky movie" Which is a pretty long title for a movie, but I'd watch it.

Screenshot 4: A Nightmare on Elm Street
My favorite comment on this one: "holy god, i don't want to know or ever see that movie." Yes, well, it is quite a disturbing image, but this movie is certainly a classic that is worth watching. Gave half a point to someone who guessed Freddy Kruger or picked one of the (inferior) sequels. Funny answer: "Tarantino making a movie starring Luke's salvaged hand from Bespin." which is another movie I'd love to see!

Screenshot 5: Black Christmas (1974)
Only a few of you got this one... Interestingly, more than a couple people thought this was Final Destination. But no, this was Bob Clarke's precursor to the slasher film (you may know Bob Clarke from Porky's or A Christmas Story). Very influential, but not seen much. There was a crappy remake a couple years ago, but even that has a few cool moments in it (of course, the best thing about recent remakes is that they always signal really awesome special edition DVDs for the original). Someone rightly pointed out that I should have put this up in the #1 slot to complete a holiday horror trifecta, but fleh. My favorite answer for this ended up being "The Shrink-wrapping of Molly Hartley", though I also rather liked "Dude, Where's My Airbag?" and "Honey, I Shrinkwrapped the Kids".

Screenshot 6: Bride of Frankenstein
Most of you got this one, so I guess I don't need to tell you how great this movie is (though I think I might still prefer the original Frankenstein). Except for the person who guessed "The Addams Family" or the person who said it looks like "Elvira" (but then, that person eventually got around to giving the right answer).

Screenshot 7: Black Sheep
No, this wasn't "Silence of the Lambs 2: Heap of Sheep." Nor was it "A Typical Irish Vacation" (though what do I know? Maybe it is!) No, this was "LA Traffic camera vs. Fargo II - This Time It's Personal". Wait, no, that's not right. It's actually a New Zealand film about mutated killer sheep. Yes it is quite silly and also quite awesome. A few of you got this, and it was one of the more obscure choices, so good job!

Screenshot 8: Evil Dead II
So this was a tough one. Most of you at least got close by guessing Evil Dead (rather than the sequel), and I have to admit that there isn't much that would differentiate the two given this screenshot, but some people correctly guessed it was the sequel, so there. Best incorrect answers: "A1 steak sauce commercial" and of course "Nixon".

Screenshot 9: The Shining
Heeere's Johnny! Did anyone see the latest episode of The Venture Brothers? I loved that scene where Dr. Venture yells at Hank, saying "Not every black guy has the Shining!" Then, later in the episode, it turns out that the black guy has the Shining. Hysterical. So yeah, I love this movie. I was thinking about choosing a screen from when the black guy is laying on his bed at home and there's these weird pictures of naked girls with afros on the wall... but I figured that might be too obscure. This screen is a little more iconic, and most of you got it, so nice work.

Screenshot 10: Bubba Ho-tep
I have to tell you, I was kinda shocked at how many people got this one right. Sure, a couple of you didn't know it, but most of you did. I'm impressed. Directed by tallmanian favorite Don Coscarelli, this movie tells the story of Elvis and JFK fighting a mummy in an old-folks home. Best non-answer: "Evil Knievel: The Golden Years". Also, "X-men Origins: Wolverine".

That wraps up this round. Good luck on the next one!
