This time we're looking at the coot.
It is a black water bird typically found inland on lakes and reservoirs, as well as rivers, with a white beak and red eyes.
They are present in the UK throughout the year, and are related to (but larger than) the moorhen.
They're over a foot long, and eat insects as well as plants.
If I've got a decent photograph of them I might look at its cousin, the moorhen.
