The moorhen is slightly smaller but less than half the weight of the coot.

Rather obviously it's most colourful feature is its bright red and yellow beak, with the accompanying picture taken on Ilkley Moor.

The moorhen's diet includes tadpoles, aquatic plants, grass and insects. They are resident all year round.
